TransAlta Commissions 720 MWh WaterCharger Battery Storage System on Alberta Grid

TransAlta has brought online its 180 MW / 720 MWh WaterCharger battery energy storage system linked to a 240 kV substation, providing fast-frequency response and market arbitrage in Alberta.

Utility-Scale Battery Architecture

The WaterCharger facility utilizes lithium iron phosphate battery cells housed across 160 containerized enclosures delivering 180 MW of power and 720 MWh of storage capacity.

A dedicated 240/34.5 kV substation with 2 power transformers rated at 120 MVA each connects the battery complex directly to the Alberta interconnected electric system.

Grid Balancing and Fast Frequency Response

Grid-forming inverters respond to transmission voltage and frequency excursions within 150 ms, reinforcing system inertia against intermittent renewable drops.

The battery system can absorb excess wind generation during overnight hours and discharge up to 4 hours of peak power during critical demand periods.
