Siemens Energy India Wins Major Order for 765 kV Gas-Insulated Substation Package at Khavda Renewable Park

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has awarded Siemens Energy India a landmark contract to supply and construct an extra-high-voltage 765 kV Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS) and 330 Mvar shunt reactor bays to evacuate clean power from Khavda Phase IV in Gujarat.

High-Voltage Switchgear for India’s Premier Green Energy Zone

The Khavda renewable energy complex in Gujarat’s Kutch district continues its rapid expansion toward 30 GW total generation capacity. To pool additional solar generation from Phase IV, POWERGRID contracted Siemens Energy India on September 30, 2026, for the turnkey delivery of 765 kV and 400 kV GIS equipment bays.

Because the harsh saline desert environment causes intense surface pollution and flashovers on traditional open-air insulators, enclosed gas-insulated switchgear provides superior operational availability and slashes required substation land footprint by more than 70%.

Heavy Shunt Reactors and Circuit Breaker Technology

The package includes 330 Mvar, 765 kV single-phase shunt reactor banks engineered to suppress severe Ferranti overvoltage effects along lightly loaded long-distance 765 kV transmission corridors during evening solar ramping.

Siemens Energy will manufacture the GIS circuit breakers utilizing advanced arc-quenching nozzles and digital optical current sensors that deliver sub-cycle fault interruption within 40 milliseconds.

Commissioning Timeline and Make in India Alignment

Major components will be produced at Siemens Energy’s factory in Aurangabad, fulfilling domestic content mandates. Site commissioning is targeted for late 2027.
