State Grid China Commissions Shaoxing 1,000 kV UHV Substation Expansion with 3,000 MVA Transformer Banks

State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has energized the Phase II expansion of the Shaoxing 1,000 kV Ultra-High-Voltage AC substation in Zhejiang Province, deploying ultra-low-loss 3,000 MVA transformer banks to absorb 6 GW of offshore wind and western solar power.

Upgrading the Industrial Power Heart of Zhejiang

On September 30, 2026, State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power successfully completed high-voltage energization testing for the second 3,000 MVA single-phase autotransformer bank at the Shaoxing 1,000 kV UHV substation. The station serves as the central receiving hub for the Baihetan-Zhejiang ±800 kV UHVDC link and East China coastal offshore wind farms.

The expansion raises Shaoxing’s total transformation capacity to 6,000 MVA, delivering an annual transmission capability of over 35 billion kilowatt-hours to the high-tech manufacturing corridor spanning Hangzhou Bay and Ningbo.

Digital Twin and Optical Current Transformer Integration

The Shaoxing expansion marks the full commercial integration of fully optical electronic current transformers (FOCT) operating across the entire 1,000 kV switchyard. The FOCT system eliminates oil-insulated secondary CT circuits, eliminating explosive failure risks and delivering microsecond-precision transient wave capture.
