SEWA Completes 220 kV Substation Upgrade at Al Layyah Power Station

Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has completed the commissioning of its 220/33 kV Al Layyah transmission substation, installing 3 power transformers rated at 150 MVA each to evacuate power from a 1026 MW combined-cycle plant.

High-Voltage Transmission Modernization

The upgraded 220 kV gas-insulated substation replaces older air-insulated equipment, reducing footprint by 65 % and boosting fire safety.

3 power transformers rated at 150 MVA each step down generated power from 220 kV to 33 kV for distribution across Sharjah city.

Grid Interconnection and Efficiency Gains

The substation connects the 1026 MW high-efficiency Al Layyah power plant to the UAE federal electricity transmission network.
