Regensburg Netz Deploys Schneider Electric GM AirSeT SF6-Free Pure Air GIS to Decarbonize Bavarian Substation Fleet

German regional distribution network operator Regensburg Netz has commissioned Schneider Electric’s GM AirSeT medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, eliminating SF6 greenhouse gases using pure dry air and vacuum breaking technology.

Zero Global Warming Potential Insulation in Primary Distribution

In compliance with EU regulations mandating the phase-out of fluorinated greenhouse gases in medium-voltage switchgear up to 24 kV, Regensburg Netz selected Schneider Electric’s GM AirSeT technology for a major substation overhaul in Bavaria.

The switchgear replaces traditional sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) with filtered pure dry air for dielectric insulation, combined with vacuum interrupters, completely removing F-gas reporting, handling, and end-of-life recycling liabilities.

Integrated Digital Telemetry and Thermal Monitoring

Each GM AirSeT panel is fitted with wireless thermal sensors on busbar connections and digital pressure telemetry reporting directly to the utility’s SCADA system, preventing thermal runaways and enabling condition-based predictive maintenance.

The installation demonstrates that SF6-free primary distribution switchgear delivers identical 24 kV 25 kA short-circuit breaking capabilities within standard substation footprints.
