KEPCO Completes ±500 kV HVDC Bukdangjin-Godeok Transmission Line to Power Samsung Semiconductor Mega-Cluster

To guarantee uninterrupted power quality for Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor fabrication campus, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has energized Phase 2 of the ±500 kV HVDC Bukdangjin-Godeok project, adding 1.5 GW of underground transmission capacity.

3.0 Gigawatt Dedicated High-Voltage Direct Current Supply

Advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) semiconductor lithography processes cannot tolerate voltage dips lasting even a single cycle. With Phase 2 energized, the completed 34 km Bukdangjin-Godeok link delivers a total of 3,000 MW directly into Godeok Substation.

The system utilizes ±500 kV high-voltage XLPE insulated cables routed fully underground through utility tunnels, eliminating environmental exposure and transmission lightning flashovers.

Converter Station Infrastructure with Millisecond Voltage Support

The Bukdangjin and Godeok converter stations deploy high-capacity VSC converter transformers and active voltage regulation that dynamically injects reactive power during AC grid faults.

KEPCO’s successful energization solidifies South Korea’s domestic manufacturing capability for 500 kV HVDC sub-modules, transformers, and high-voltage cable accessories.
