Hitachi Energy and Enedis Sign $398 Million Framework Agreement for Eco-Efficient Transformers Across France

Hitachi Energy and French distribution system operator Enedis have formalized major multi-year framework contracts valued at $398 million (€350 million) for the supply of high-efficiency, eco-friendly distribution and primary substation transformers designed to accelerate EV charging infrastructure and distributed renewable integration.

Modernizing France’s National Distribution Network for Decentralized Energy

Enedis, which manages over 1.4 million kilometers of medium- and low-voltage electrical networks across mainland France, announced the milestone agreement on September 28, 2026. The contract ensures a secure supply of advanced transformers through 2030 to support surging electrification demands from industrial heat pumps, widespread electric mobility hubs, and localized rooftop solar installations.

The framework includes medium-power substation transformers (up to 40 MVA at 63 kV/20 kV) and high-density pad-mounted distribution transformers engineered for minimal no-load losses and enhanced overload resilience during summer heatwaves.

Biodegradable Ester Fluids and Smart Digital Asset Health

A significant portion of the transformer fleet will utilize biodegradable synthetic and natural ester dielectric fluids instead of conventional mineral oil, providing superior fire safety ratings (K-class) and zero environmental persistence in sensitive water protection zones.

Each primary substation transformer will be delivered equipped with Hitachi Energy’s CoreTec digital monitoring package, featuring fiber-optic winding temperature probes, online dissolved gas analysis (DGA), and dynamic loading software compatible with Enedis’s automated grid operating platform.

Securing European Supply Chain Resilience and Decarbonization

Units will be manufactured across Hitachi Energy’s European transformer manufacturing facilities, maximizing local European supply chains and utilizing low-carbon electrical steel and recycled copper conductors to minimize embodied lifecycle carbon emissions.

Enedis highlighted that the multi-year framework guarantees volume allocation during a period of acute global transformer shortages, ensuring France’s transition to net-zero power distribution remains on track.
