Invenergy’s Grain Belt Express Finalizes Phase 1 EPC Contracts for ±600 kV HVDC Converter Stations Across Kansas and Missouri

Invenergy Transmission has executed major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract releases for Phase 1 of the $11 billion Grain Belt Express project, advancing two multi-gigawatt ±600 kV HVDC converter stations in Kansas and Missouri.

Transmitting 5,000 MW of Great Plains Wind Power

Phase 1 of Grain Belt Express spans approximately 530 miles from southwest Kansas to Monroe County, Missouri, delivering up to 5,000 MW of low-cost wind and solar electricity directly into the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) transmission network.

The terminal converter stations deploy state-of-the-art Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, featuring heavy converter transformers rated up to 600 MVA, harmonic filter banks, and DC gas-insulated switchgear engineered for bi-directional energy transfer.

Historic Right-of-Way and Supply Chain Milestones

With over 90% of land easements secured and environmental clearances finalized, civil site preparation at the Dodge City converter facility is slated to begin early next year.

Grain Belt Express stands as the largest private clean energy transmission infrastructure project in U.S. history, delivering vital grid reliability and price relief to Midwestern consumers.
