Mine Conveyor or Haul Trucks: Energy Prices and the Throughput Break-Even
The conveyor decision depends on annual tonnes and route stability as well as electricity and diesel prices.

1. Choose a comparable transport service
A conveyor substitutes a fixed transport corridor for a flexible vehicle fleet. Its energy advantage does not automatically pay for installation, transfer stations or loss of route flexibility. Compare the same annual tonnes, horizontal distance, vertical lift and material specification, including empty returns for trucks. A mine moving its pit exit every season needs a different capital and relocation analysis from a stable long-life corridor. Here both alternatives deliver the same material to the same destination.
2. Read fuel evidence on the right basis
The EIA October 2026 report records September US retail diesel at 6.29 USD/US gallon. Dividing by 3.78541 gives about 1.6616 USD/L, but that is a retail geographic benchmark, not a bulk mine fuel price. Taxes, freight and rebates must be reconciled before use. The World Bank Pink Sheet reports Brent at 90.9 USD/barrel in August and 116.8 in September; crude is not diesel delivered to a mine. The DOE mining study treats materials handling as a separate efficiency opportunity; its historical averages do not replace a route simulation.
3. Explicit annual model
Illustrative throughput is 5000000 t/year. Trucks consume 0.30 L/t at hypothetical diesel 1.60 USD/L, giving fuel 0.48 USD/t; add selected maintenance 0.60 USD/t for variable cost 1.08 USD/t, or 5400000 USD/year. The conveyor uses 2 kWh/t at hypothetical electricity 0.12 USD/kWh, giving energy 0.24 USD/t; selected maintenance 0.40 USD/t makes 0.64 USD/t, or 3200000 USD/year. Gross saving is 2200000 USD/year. Subtract an illustrative incremental annual capital burden of 1500000 USD: net advantage is 700000 USD/year.
4. Diesel sensitivity
With other assumptions fixed, diesel at 1.20, 1.60 and 2.00 USD/L produces net annual conveyor advantages of 100000, 700000 and 1300000 USD. At base prices the throughput break-even is 1500000 / (1.08 − 0.64) = 3409091 t/year, approximately. At only 3000000 t/year, net advantage is 3000000 × 0.44 − 1500000 = −180000 USD/year. Electricity at 0.18 USD/kWh raises conveyor variable cost to 0.76 USD/t and lowers base-volume advantage to 100000 USD/year. Fuel and power risks can therefore reverse the selection.
| Diesel USD/L | Truck variable USD/t | Conveyor variable USD/t | Annual net advantage USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.20 | 0.96 | 0.64 | 100000 |
| 1.60 | 1.08 | 0.64 | 700000 |
| 2.00 | 1.20 | 0.64 | 1300000 |
Illustrative annual conveyor advantage after a 1500000 USD annual capital burden, at 5000000 t/year and diesel prices 1.20, 1.60, 2.00 USD/L. Electricity is fixed at 0.12 USD/kWh. No vendor quotation or site fuel observation is implied.
5. Decision and tender requirements
Require a measured haul cycle with payload, grades, queue time, idling, rolling resistance and fuel data. Specify conveyor lift, belt resistance, starting duty, transfer losses, availability and spillage controls. A tender must identify whether the annual capital burden includes financing, replacement and relocation; it is not a quoted purchase price. Use the lowest credible scheduled tonnage for a downside case. Contract availability should cover the entire transport path, since a single transfer outage can stop an otherwise efficient belt.
6. Where the model stops
The model excludes operators, roads, tyres, dust control, truck capital, salvage, taxes and carbon charges unless separately incorporated into the incremental burden or maintenance boundary. Avoid comparing a fully depreciated truck fleet with a new conveyor without recognizing remaining fleet replacement. Demand charges and regenerative downhill energy require separate treatment; energy recovery needs a receptive electrical system. The positive annual result is not NPV, and the fixed burden is an assumption rather than a financing offer.
7. Frequently asked questions
Is the September retail diesel price the model price? No; 1.60 USD/L is hypothetical. Does higher diesel always favor a conveyor? Within fixed route and throughput assumptions yes, but relocation or availability may dominate. Is 3409091 t/year a universal threshold? No; it follows only from the stated incremental burden and variable-cost difference.
