How to Create an Electrical Single Line Diagram Online
A practical workflow from source and transformer data to connected terminals, validation, revisions and export in an online SLD editor.
1. Gather the model inputs
Define the purpose of the diagram: concept design, equipment procurement or a specific engineering study. Gather supply voltage and frequency, source fault data, transformer ratings and impedance, cable lengths and impedance, loads, protection settings and normal switch positions. Record where each value came from. Unknown values should remain an explicit data request rather than a plausible-looking assumption.
2. Build a small connected network
Open a Voltformer project and its SLD workspace. Begin with a source, transformer, receiving bus and one outgoing feeder. Connect the intended terminals, enter ratings and inspect the electrical properties. Expand the model only after this small network behaves as expected. Crossing lines are not proof of connectivity.
Use a consistent voltage basis. For a balanced three-phase example, 1 MVA at 11 kV corresponds to approximately 52.5 A using I = S / (√3 × U), with U as line-to-line voltage. This checks a unit conversion; it does not size a cable or establish equipment fault duty.
Name equipment and buses consistently so a reviewer can trace the diagram to the equipment list. Check open ties, isolated loads and transformer sides before running a study.
3. Review and hand over
Run model validation and inspect warnings before analysis. Select the study for the engineering question, check convergence and unavailable outputs, and retain assumptions. Change one input at a time when investigating a surprising result.
Save a named revision before issuing a drawing. Export the visual deliverable and retain structured project data plus relevant study reports. The recipient should be able to identify the revision, operating case, equipment data and unresolved items. A PDF is a communication artifact; it does not by itself prove that the model is complete or approved.
