WSP final design supports light rail across Lake Washington’s floating bridge
WSP reported the passenger opening of Sound Transit’s Crosslake Connection across Lake Washington. As prime engineering consultant for final design, the company supported a light rail connection using the floating highway bridge. The opening completes the East Link connection and links services with the wider Seattle-area network, including new stations at Mercer Island and Judkins Park. The source highlights a specialized transport engineering role. It does not turn the consultant’s appointment into ownership of the bridge or the entire civil construction contract.

Engineering interpretation
A railway on a floating structure must account for movements that a fixed land alignment does not experience in the same way. Bridge response, rail geometry and the transitions to shore need coordinated design assumptions. Electrical supply, signalling and vehicle operation also have to remain compatible with those structural interfaces. These observations explain the engineering significance of the opening without adding unreported design parameters. In an EPC comparison, final design responsibility is distinct from fabrication, bridge construction and railway operating authority. The passenger milestone indicates that the connection entered service, while the consultant’s actual contribution should still be read from the published appointment. Asset performance over time and any later changes need their own evidence.
