# South Africa’s NTCSA Launches 1,164 km 400 kV Independent Transmission Scheme to Unblock Cape Renewable Corridors

> At the Windaba 2026 conference, the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) formally initiated procurement for its Independent Transmission Projects (ITP) program, tendering 1,164 km of new 400 kV transmission lines and multiple 400/132 kV 500 MVA main transmission substations to unlock over 6 GW of stranded wind and solar generation across the Northern and Western Cape.

## Overcoming the Historic Grid Bottleneck in the Cape Provinces

South Africa’s legacy transmission grid was engineered around massive coal-fired power stations in Mpumalanga. As clean energy developers flocked to world-class solar resources in the Northern Cape and wind corridors in the Western and Eastern Cape, the regional transmission system ran entirely out of hosting capacity, stalling billions of dollars in private investments.

To bypass public balance-sheet constraints, NTCSA and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy launched the ITP framework, welcoming private consortia to finance, construct, and maintain critical 400 kV corridors under long-term availability concessions.

## Aries-Nieuwehoop-Ferrum 400 kV Corridors and 500 MVA Transformers

The flagship procurement tranche includes 1,164 km of heavy overhead lines and four new 400/132 kV Main Transmission Substations (MTS) along the Aries, Nieuwehoop, and Ferrum nodes. Each MTS will house two 400/132 kV 500 MVA autotransformers and high-capacity shunt reactors to stabilize grid voltage across sprawling Karoo transmission spans.

The substations are designed with automated on-load tap changers (OLTC) and online dissolved gas analysis (DGA), paired with rapid-response STATCOM units to maintain voltage stability during sudden solar fluctuations.

## Catalyzing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)

Backed by multilateral funding from the $9.3 billion Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), the program transforms South Africa into a vibrant open-access wholesale electricity market under the recently enacted Electricity Regulation Amendment Act (ERAA).

Commercial operations of the first ITP lines are scheduled for late 2028, directly preventing load shedding and enabling massive industrial decarbonization.
