RWE and TotalEnergies Complete Offshore Grid Hookup for 795 MW OranjeWind Project to TenneT Substation

Joint venture partners RWE and TotalEnergies have completed the 66 kV subsea inter-array cable hookup for the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea, successfully interfacing array circuits with TenneT’s offshore high-voltage AC substation to power 500 MW of industrial electrolyzers.

Pioneering Integration of Offshore Wind with Industrial Green Hydrogen

Located 53 kilometers off the coast of IJmuiden, the 795 MW OranjeWind project represents Europe’s leading system-integration offshore model. RWE and TotalEnergies completed cable pull-in and jointing on September 29, 2026, linking 53 wind turbine positions via 66 kV wet-design XLPE inter-array circuits directly to TenneT’s offshore transformer platform.

Rather than relying solely on baseload grid injection, OranjeWind is explicitly coupled with 500 MW of onshore green hydrogen electrolyzer capacity and smart industrial BESS assets located at the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, effectively buffering North Sea wind intermittency.

Offshore Substation Transformer and Gas-Insulated Switchgear

TenneT’s offshore platform transforms 66 kV array power up to 220 kV utilizing two 450 MVA low-loss offshore power transformers filled with synthetic ester dielectric liquid to ensure maximum environmental safety in marine ecosystems.

The topside features compact 66 kV and 220 kV vacuum and gas-insulated switchgear, high-integrity subsea cable termination hang-offs, and fully redundant SCADA communication channels linking offshore assets to national control centers in Arnhem.

Commissioning Timeline and Commercial Operations

With offshore cable connections secured, full turbine installation will commence in early 2027, targeting commercial commercial operations and first industrial green hydrogen delivery by late 2027.
