North Sea Offshore Transformer Platforms Energized for 960 MW He Dreiht and 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3

Transmission system operator TenneT and developers energize major offshore substation platforms in the German North Sea, integrating nearly 1.9 GW of subsidy-free offshore wind power via 66 kV inter-array networks and high-voltage grid links.

Commissioning 66 kV Array Substations for He Dreiht and Borkum Riffgrund 3

Offshore transmission operator TenneT, alongside energy developers EnBW and Ørsted, has energized the offshore converter and transformer platforms servicing the 960 MW He Dreiht and 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farms in the German Bight.

The joint milestone connects approximately 1,873 MW of new clean generation capacity to the mainland extra-high-voltage transmission grid, delivering enough electricity to power over two million European households.

Direct Step-Up to EHV Transmission with Zero-Subsidy Generation Model

Both offshore wind farms operate on a subsidy-free merchant model, relying on next-generation 15 MW wind turbine generators and direct 66 kV inter-array submarine cable topologies to optimize levelized cost of energy (LCOE).

The offshore transformer substations house high-capacity 66/155 kV and 155/380 kV step-up power transformers, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas-insulated switchgear, and advanced dynamic shunt reactors designed to neutralize cable charging currents along lengthy subsea export links.
