FAAN announced a planned temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for about 25 days to repair damaged pavement, treat cracks and resurface affected sections. It also plans to extend the runway for wide-body aircraft.

The October 20 start was tentative and subject to confirmation; FAAN said it would later announce confirmed closure and reopening dates. It cited deterioration and heavy-rain damage as safety concerns and advised passengers to check with airlines.
