927 MW Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm Loads Out Substation Topsides for Baltic Sea Sail-Away to 50Hertz Grid Connection

Offshore construction for the 927 MW Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea reached a landmark milestone as both 3,200-tonne substation topsides were loaded onto heavy transport barges for sail-away to their offshore installation site.

Dual High-Voltage Offshore Substations for Baltic Generation

Fabricated at European shipyards, the two offshore transformer platforms (named Gennaker West and Gennaker East) will step up power from 103 Siemens Gamesa 9 MW turbines from 66 kV inter-array strings to the 220 kV transmission export level.

Each platform houses dual 300 MVA 220/66 kV oil-immersed power transformers with synthetic ester fluid, 220 kV gas-insulated switchgear, and auxiliary backup diesel generator packages with black-start synchronization.

Direct Subsea Cable Interconnection to the 50Hertz Grid

Transmission system operator 50Hertz will connect the topsides to the onshore grid at the Sanitz and Gristow substations via 220 kV three-core subsea XLPE cables totaling over 180 route kilometers.

Once commissioned in early 2027, Gennaker will become the most powerful offshore wind complex in the Baltic Sea, injecting over 3.5 TWh of clean electricity annually into the northeastern German transmission grid.
