"On 17 September 2026, Statistics Canada reported August monthly increases of 1.3% in the Industrial Product Price Index and 3.1% in the Raw Materials Price Index. Producer diesel prices rose 9.6% month over month and 75.0% year over year; primary non-ferrous metal products gained 4.4% month over month. These are completed August observations, not September or October readings."

"Our economic interpretation: manufacturing output prices and purchased raw-material prices describe different boundaries. The factory-gate product index excludes downstream freight and indirect taxes; the raw-material index includes charges to bring inputs to the establishment. Therefore, adding the two headline percentage changes does not produce an equipment inflation rate. A transformer supplier’s winding metal, insulation, labour and transport must be traced to their own quantities and contract bases."

"For an explicitly illustrative budget, assume an eligible diesel purchase component of CAD 100,000 is indexed one-for-one to the reported monthly diesel movement. The adjustment would be CAD 9,600, making that component CAD 109,600. It would not increase every other budget line by 9.6%. This constructed example has no supplier quote behind it and does not predict the price paid at a retail filling station."

"Canadian project buyers should request material and fuel adjustment formulas separately, including their base month. The non-ferrous group covers more than conductor metals, so its 4.4% movement cannot automatically price copper windings. Compare delivered equipment offers using the same freight scope; otherwise an output index and a transport surcharge could be mixed or counted twice.",
"For a manufacturing tender, identify the metal and fuel components actually exposed to these indexes and weight them by their share of the bid. A conductor purchase also depends on usable yield: scrap recovery, fabrication losses and the delivered specification can alter material cost per finished unit. Keep quantity and yield assumptions separate from the index adjustment, and require the supplier to explain which reference series and comparison month govern any escalation clause.",
