Bird Construction announced approximately CAD 1.2 billion in industrial projects and new or renewed maintenance agreements. Through 2Nations Bird, its additional BHP Jansen scope includes fabrication, delivery, construction and commissioning of 5 non-process infrastructure buildings. At Dow’s Path2Zero program, a separate award covers mechanical, structural, piping, buildings and insulation work for the ethane cracking unit, followed by pre-commissioning. Engineering and delivery perspective
Process construction and recurring maintenance share specialist trades but have different planning interfaces. Non-process buildings support a mine without representing the complete mineral-processing plant. At an ethane cracking unit, mechanical installation, piping completion and insulation must be coordinated with testing and pre-commissioning boundaries. Maintenance agreements are carried out over their service periods rather than being equivalent to one completed asset. The useful comparison is the specific buildings or process packages awarded and the responsibilities connecting them to the owner’s wider program.
Contract and project comparison
For project comparisons, identify the owner, delivery model and contracted package before assigning responsibility for the complete asset. An award, negotiation, backlog figure or construction target describes a different stage from commissioning and sustained operation. Review the boundaries between civil work, equipment supply, electrical systems and controls, together with the acceptance documentation and the owner’s operating requirements.
