## Shipment and sales gap

Australian Mining reported on 23 October 2026 that Fortescue was maintaining full-year guidance while negotiating iron-ore sales with China Mineral Resources Group. The miner shipped 46.8 million tonnes during the September quarter but recorded sales of 42.9 million tonnes. The difference reflected ongoing negotiations and product-placement decisions, according to the report. Fortescue expected inventories to increase by a further four to five million tonnes in October as it optimized sales channels. The company warned that operations could be affected, including through production adjustments, if negotiations were not concluded by the end of 2026. These are company expectations and conditions described by the publisher; the report does not establish the eventual outcome of negotiations.

## Port maintenance and unit costs

The quarter also included Fortescue’s largest-ever shutdown across its port operations. The maintenance work included replacement of critical infrastructure in a train unloader and major components on a reclaimer and shiploader. Total shipments were 6% below the corresponding FY26 quarter and 11% below the June quarter. Iron-ore processing declined 4% year on year to 48.8 million tonnes, while mined ore rose 4% to 62.7 million tonnes. The company’s hematite C1 unit cost increased 13% from the June quarter to US\$21.98 per wet metric tonne, 21% higher than a year earlier. Fortescue attributed about US\$1.40 per wet tonne of cost to elevated diesel prices and the remainder to broader inflation and lower supply-chain volumes.

## Guidance and resource development

Despite the sales disruption and higher costs, Fortescue retained FY27 shipment guidance of 197–207 million tonnes, including 11–14 million tonnes from Iron Bridge, and hematite C1 cost guidance of US\$20.50–21.75 per wet metric tonne. The report says both targets remain subject to the outcome of the CMRG negotiations. Fortescue also reported a 153% increase in the Blacksmith project’s Mineral Resource to 615 million tonnes and declared a maiden Ore Reserve of 196 million tonnes at 58% iron. The company sees the project as part of replacing production as existing mines mature. Separately, it sold more than 40 tonnes of copper concentrate treated with its Toowong arsenic-removal process during October, a commercial milestone described by the company.

## Analysis and limits

Fortescue’s quarter separates physical mine and port throughput from recognized sales: the shipped tonnage exceeded sales, while inventory and working capital increased. Port maintenance and buyer negotiations were concurrent factors, so the article does not support assigning the entire shipment-sales difference to either one alone. The retained guidance is conditional, and the company’s October inventory estimate is forward-looking. The cost increase also combines diesel, general inflation and lower volumes, which should be kept distinct when assessing operating economics. For the next quarter, relevant checks include whether sales and shipments converge, stockpiles normalize, negotiations conclude and port performance returns to plan. Blacksmith resource growth and Toowong concentrate sales are separate developments; neither removes near-term uncertainty in Fortescue’s iron-ore sales channel.
