The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and Powerlink Queensland have commercially energized twin 250 MVAR synchronous condensers at the Western Downs 275 kV Substation, providing crucial physical inertia and fault current to support over 3,000 MW of solar and wind generation.

Restoring Physical System Strength Following Thermal Retirements

On September 29, 2026, Powerlink Queensland achieved full commercial commissioning of two 250 MVAR hydrogen-cooled synchronous condensers at the Western Downs substation. As Queensland accelerates towards its 80% renewable energy target by 2035, the retirement of coal-fired units has lowered short-circuit levels and rotational grid inertia.

The dual machines do not generate active megawatts; instead, their spinning rotors provide immediate physical inertia of over 2,200 MW-seconds and deliver fault currents up to 4.5 times their rated capacity during transient network disturbances.

Preventing Inverter Invalidation in High-Penetration Zones

Without synchronous condensers, grid-following solar and battery inverters in the Western Downs corridor faced curtailment due to voltage stability limits and control loop interactions.

The energization of the units stabilizes the 275 kV regional network, enabling an immediate 650 MW increase in export capability from surrounding renewable energy zones into the South East Queensland load center.
