IEC 61850 Substation Automation: GOOSE Messaging, Sampled Values (SV), and Process Bus Protection

Digital substation architecture, GOOSE peer-to-peer tripping latency (<4 ms), Sampled Values (SV) per IEC 61850-9-2LE / IEC 61869-9, and IEEE 1588 PTP time sync

1. Digital Substation Paradigm Shift

The IEC 61850 standard replaces hundreds of copper control and CT/VT cables with high-speed fiber-optic Ethernet communication.

2. Communication Profiles & Latency Budgets (IEC 61850-5)

Message ServiceProtocol LayerMax Latency BudgetApplication Purpose
GOOSE (Type 1A, Class P1)Direct Layer-2 Ethernet Multicast< 3 - 4 msFast trip signals, interlocking, breaker failure
Sampled Values (SV 9-2LE)Direct Layer-2 Ethernet Multicast< 2 ms (Deterministic)Digitized CT/VT instantaneous current & voltage
MMS (Manufacturing Message)Layer-7 TCP/IP Client-Server< 100 msSCADA telecontrol, events, waveform retrieval

3. Process Bus Sampled Values (SV) Architecture

Merging Units (MU) digitize analog CT and VT measurements right at the switchyard and stream digital SV streams per IEC 61869-9:

  • 50 Hz Grids: 4000 samples/second (80 samples per cycle).
  • 60 Hz Grids: 4800 samples/second (80 samples per cycle).

4. IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP)

Digital process buses require sub-microsecond time synchronization (< 1 μs) via IEEE 1588 PTP Power Profile (IEC/IEEE 61850-9-3).
