Vikran Engineering Clinches POWERGRID EPC Contract for 400/220 kV Tumkur Substation Expansion and ±300 MVAR STATCOM

Indian EPC contractor Vikran Engineering has secured a major turnkey contract from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) for bay extensions and the installation of a ±300 MVAR STATCOM system at the 400/220 kV Tumkur-II substation in Karnataka.

Dynamic Voltage Stability for South India’s Clean Energy Hub

The project entails civil construction, 400 kV air-insulated switchgear bay extensions, and the deployment of a ±300 MVAR modular multilevel VSC STATCOM paired with mechanical switched shunt capacitors (MSCs).

Located near the Pavagada 2,000 MW Solar Park, the Tumkur-II substation experiences rapid voltage fluctuations during intermittent solar generation; the new STATCOM provides sub-cycle reactive power compensation.

Turnkey Scope and Indigenous Manufacturing

Vikran’s scope covers design, engineering, testing, and commissioning of the STATCOM coupling transformer, water-cooled IGBT valves, and substation digital automation under IEC 61850 protocol.

Scheduled for commercial operation in late 2027, the installation will bolster grid reliability across Karnataka and neighboring states.
