Taipower Energizes Fully Underground 161 kV Gas-Insulated Substation in Tainan to Power 2nm Semiconductor Fabrication

Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art fully subterranean 161 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, dedicated to providing high-reliability dual-feed power to next-generation 2-nanometer wafer fabrication facilities.

Seismically Isolated Underground Electrical Vault

Engineered beneath a four-story surface park to withstand Class 7 earthquakes, the underground substation houses four 60 MVA 161/22.8 kV low-noise, flame-retardant power transformers and 161 kV SF6-insulated switchgear bays.

The facility features dual redundant transmission feeds from separate 345/161 kV primary regional bulk supply stations, ensuring zero interruption during localized transmission faults.

Millisecond Dynamic Voltage Ride-Through Support

To shield sensitive photolithography steppers from microsecond voltage sags, the substation incorporates fast-acting static VAR compensators and solid-state transfer switches capable of sub-cycle busbar changeover.

The energization guarantees an ultra-stable 240 MW power supply for critical global semiconductor supply chain operations.
