Statnett and Svenska kraftnät Energize 1,000 MVA 420 kV Phase-Shifting Transformer at Hasle Substation

To resolve structural power loop flows between southern Norway and western Sweden, transmission system operators Statnett and Svenska kraftnät have energized a 1,000 MVA 420 kV Phase-Shifting Transformer (PST) at Hasle Substation near the national border.

Eliminating Loop Flows Across the Nordic Synchronous Area

Massive wind generation buildouts in northern Sweden often route unscheduled transit electricity southward through Norway’s hydro-rich grid, creating bottlenecks that restrict cross-border trading capacity. The new Hasle PST actively controls power flow across the 420 kV cross-border tie-line.

With a rated throughput of 1,000 MVA, the unit utilizes dual-tank design separating the shunt and series active parts, allowing precise phase angle adjustment up to ±25 degrees without exceeding transformer core flux density limits.

Unlocking 500 MW of Additional Cross-Border Commercial Capacity

By steering power directly along contracted contractual paths, Nordic TSOs can safely expand cross-border capacity between price bidding zones NO1 (Oslo) and SE3 (Stockholm) by 500 MW.

The transformer is equipped with online dissolved gas chromatography, optical fiber hot-spot temperature probes, and biodegradable synthetic ester insulating liquid to satisfy stringent environmental protection standards in the surrounding forest catchment basin.
