Siemens Energy and Končar Accelerate Croatian Power Transformer Facility as 80% of European Fleet Nears End of Life

Siemens Energy and Croatian electrical engineering leader Končar have accelerated construction timelines for their joint high-voltage power transformer plant in Zagreb. Industry assessments reveal that over 80% of Europe's installed transmission transformers will surpass their 40-year design life by 2035, necessitating urgent manufacturing expansion.

Addressing the Looming European Fleet Retirement

Data presented at the Future of Energy Conference highlights an impending crunch: tens of thousands of large power transformers (LPTs) installed across Western and Central Europe between 1970 and 1990 are approaching insulation degradation limits. Combined with renewable energy integration and industrial electrification, annual replacement demand is projected to double by 2028.

The expanded Zagreb manufacturing facility will produce large power transformers up to 550 kV and 400 MVA, incorporating advanced Ester-based dielectric fluids and digital monitoring bushings to extend asset lifespans.

Supply Chain Resilience and Shorter Delivery Cycles

By sourcing specialized electrical steel and copper windings within the European Single Market, the joint venture targets reducing lead times from current industry averages of 48–54 months down to 24–30 months for standardized grid operator designs.

Full commercial production is slated to launch in late 2027, prioritizing European TSOs including TenneT, Amprion, and RTE.
