RWE Approves Final Investment Decision for 400 MW / 1,100 MWh Moerdijk BESS to Anchor Dutch Transmission Grid

German utility RWE has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build a 400 MW / 1,100 MWh battery energy storage system at its Moerdijk power station site in the Netherlands, directly interconnected to TenneT’s 380 kV supergrid.

Repurposing Thermal Generation Infrastructure for Mega-Storage

By utilizing the existing high-voltage substation switchyards and grid connection rights of the Moerdijk power plant, RWE avoids protracted multi-year grid queue delays.

The facility will connect to TenneT’s 380 kV transmission network via dual 250 MVA step-up autotransformers, providing peak shaving, synthetic inertia, and black-start capabilities to the Port of Rotterdam and industrial clusters.

Mitigating Offshore Wind Influx from the North Sea

Scheduled for commercial operation in early 2028, the Moerdijk BESS will absorb surplus energy during North Sea wind surges and inject power during Dunkelflaute periods.

RWE will deploy premium tier-1 LFP chemistry with multi-layered fire mitigation and liquid glycol thermal loops exceeding Dutch PGS 37-1 safety directives.
