Eaton Expands North American Power Transformer Capacity with $160 Million Investment to Meet 34.5 kV Data Center Demand

Power management company Eaton has announced a $160 million manufacturing expansion across its Nacogdoches (Texas) and Waukesha (Wisconsin) transformer plants, significantly scaling production of three-phase pad-mounted and substation transformers rated up to 34.5 kV and 15 MVA.

Scaling Up for Hyper-Density Artificial Intelligence Campuses

Surging demand from hyperscale cloud and AI data center developers has driven lead times for medium-voltage step-down transformers past 100 weeks.

Eaton’s expanded production lines feature automated coil winding, advanced vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI), and laser-guided core assembly, shortening standard delivery cycles by 35% for standardized utility-grade designs.

Biodegradable Dielectric Fluid and Smart Monitoring Standardization

The new manufacturing cells will produce units factory-filled with environmentally friendly FR3 natural ester fluid, increasing thermal headroom and fire safety for high-density indoor and outdoor data center substations.

All manufactured units incorporate factory-integrated digital sensors for real-time dissolved gas analysis, tank pressure, and top-oil thermometry.
