# Solar LCOE: Financing, Curtailment and Interconnection in 2026

> A low module price does not establish a low export-meter cost. A solar project spends most capital before earning revenue; expensive financing and a constrained connection can overwhelm equipment savings. Calculate energy that crosses the settlement meter, then ask whether its hourly value pays for that cost. LCOE measures production cost, not the market value of daytime generation or an industrial customer’s avoided bill.

### 1. Economic decision

### 2. Evidence and dates

[World Bank](https://thedocs.worldbank.org/en/doc/74e8be41ceb20fa0da750cda2f6b9e4e-0050012026/related/CMO-Pink-Sheet-October-2026.pdf) reports European gas at 21.11 USD/MMBtu in August and 25.42 in September 2026. Those are TTF benchmarks, not solar tariffs. They motivate stress testing electricity exposure, without proving that every solar hour becomes more valuable. The [EIA October 6 outlook](https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/archives/oct26.pdf), completed October 1, forecasts 2026 US wholesale power at 52 USD/MWh. That annual hub forecast is neither an October observation nor a project PPA offer. [IRENA](https://www.irena.org/Digital-Report/Renewable-Power-Generation-Costs-in-2024) provides a historical LCOE framework; its 2024 project cohort cannot be relabelled as August–September 2026 equipment quotations.

### 3. Cost boundary

Use a single currency and discount convention. This example uses constant purchasing-power USD, a real 6% financing rate, 25 years and no tax, subsidy, residual value or inflation escalation. Include the connection asset in capital and meter losses in output. Exclude customer network charges because this is a generator export boundary. An additional connection charge billed annually belongs in operating cost, not in both capital and operating cost.

### 4. Worked calculation

Illustrative inputs are 8000000 USD generation capital plus 1000000 USD connection capital, 18000 MWh annual output before curtailment, and 180000 USD annual operating cost. The capital recovery factor is 0.06 / (1 − 1.06^-25) = 0.0782267. Applied to 9000000 USD, this gives 704040 USD annual capital recovery. Total annualized cost is 884040 USD; at 10% curtailment, export is 16200 MWh and cost is 884040 / 16200 = 54.57 USD/MWh. These are deliberately hypothetical project inputs, not observed supplier quotations.

### 5. Sensitivity

For the chart’s 884040 USD annual-cost case, curtailment alone raises export cost from 49.11 to 54.57 to 61.39 USD/MWh. Lost energy does not proportionally remove fixed costs. For the 9000000 USD project, increasing the real rate to 8% raises annualized cost to approximately 1023109 USD and the 10% case to 63.15 USD/MWh. These are isolated sensitivities; simultaneous delays and higher rates require a combined cash-flow model. A connection delay also creates interest during construction before commercial operation.

![Illustrative solar export cost](https://voltformer.com/article-charts/solar-lcoe-wacc-curtailment-interconnection-cost-2026-en.svg)

Illustrative annualized project costs of 884040 USD divided by 18000, 16200 or 14400 MWh of annual export; no measured October 2026 project price.

| Curtailment | Export cost (USD/MWh) |
|---|---|
| 0% curtailed | 49.11 |
| 10% curtailed | 54.57 |
| 20% curtailed | 61.39 |

### 6. Contract and operating evidence

Obtain a connection study with export limits, reinforcement responsibility, milestone dates and curtailment compensation. Request inverter clipping and transformer-loss assumptions separately from network restrictions. Compare hourly production with settlement prices, including negative-price clauses and availability deductions. A firm connection can justify higher equipment cost if it preserves export during valuable hours; a nominal megawatt rating without export rights cannot support the same revenue case.

A practical financing trigger is a contracted export value of 60 USD/MWh: the 10% curtailment case covers production cost at real 6% but not at 8%. This brackets the financing decision without claiming an exact universal WACC limit. At 20% curtailment even the 6% case costs 61.39 USD/MWh. Therefore compare a connection upgrade with both preserved MWh and financing terms, rather than treating curtailment as a small operating expense.

### 7. Questions and next steps

Is a low LCOE automatically bankable? No: debt service depends on timing, credit and contracted revenue. Can curtailed electricity be sold to a battery? Only if connection permissions, charging topology and incremental battery economics support it. Does 52 USD/MWh establish a PPA ceiling? No: that forecast has a different geography and averaging basis. Use the [step-up transformer guide](https://voltformer.com/articles/solar-pv-and-wind-farm-step-up-transformer-guide) for the electrical boundary and the [PPA guide](https://voltformer.com/articles/industrial-power-ppa-fixed-floating-profile-basis-risk-2026) for revenue allocation.
