Shore Power Transformers: IEC/IEEE 80005-1 HVSC Interface Design

How to coordinate port-side and ship-side transformers, frequency conversion, earthing, interlocking, power management and high-voltage shore connection testing

1. Shore Connection Is a System Interface

IEC/IEEE 80005-1:2019 with its amendments describes high-voltage shore connection systems on shore and onboard the ship. Its scope includes shore distribution, the shore-to-ship interface, transformers and reactors, frequency converters, ship distribution, control, monitoring, interlocking and power management.

The standard notes that practical applications are expected for ships requiring about 1 MVA or more or ships with a high-voltage main supply, while port authorities and national administrations can impose additional conditions.

2. Transformer and Converter Selection

Interface itemEngineering question
Shore sourceWhat are the port voltage, short-circuit level, frequency, grounding arrangement and available capacity?
Ship demandWhat are the ship voltage/frequency, maximum hotel load, starting events, harmonic spectrum and load steps?
ConversionIs a transformer alone sufficient, or is a rotating/static frequency converter required?
ConnectionAre cable management, plug/interlock, pilot signals, phase sequence and emergency release defined?

Transformer impedance and vector group affect fault current, voltage drop, inrush and ship-side protection. The design must preserve separation and safe switching through the full shore-to-ship sequence.

3. Interlocking and Power Quality

The shore breaker, ship breaker, earthing switches, cable connection, transformer, converter and power-management system require a positive interlocking sequence. The system must prevent energization with an incomplete connection and must define loss-of-communication, emergency stop, black-out and re-energization behaviour.

Harmonic current, unbalance, flicker, frequency-converter transients and transformer heating are checked at the point of common coupling and at the ship main bus.

4. Test and Operating Dossier

  • Publish one-line diagrams for shore, cable interface, ship and emergency paths.
  • Verify transformer ratio, impedance, insulation, cooling, protection, cable screen and earthing interfaces.
  • Test connection permissives, interlocks, pilot/communication signals, load transfer, emergency release and power-management limits.
  • Keep port, shipowner, classification-society, utility and equipment-maker responsibilities explicit; a transformer certificate alone does not prove HVSC system conformity.
