Rail Traction Transformers: AC/DC Supply, Regeneration and Vibration Duty

A selection guide for fixed traction-substation and onboard traction transformers covering voltage, regenerative braking, harmonics, shock, vibration, cooling a

1. Fixed Installation and Onboard Equipment Are Different

IEC 62695:2014 covers specific characteristics of traction transformers used in fixed traction substations or along the track for AC and DC traction systems and auxiliary services. IEC 60310:2026 covers transformers and inductors installed on rolling stock, including traction and auxiliary circuits, and updates shock and vibration references through IEC 61373.

The procurement record must identify whether the unit is a wayside transformer, a vehicle-mounted traction transformer, an auxiliary transformer or a transformer feeding a separate rectifier. These are different thermal, mechanical and test boundaries.

2. Electrical Sizing Inputs

InputWhat to specify
Traction voltageContact-line or third-rail voltage, insulation level, frequency and permissible operating range
Load profileTrain timetable, acceleration, braking, simultaneity, regenerative energy and auxiliary demand
Short circuitSource impedance, feeder length, return circuit, rail potential and protection clearing time
Power qualityHarmonic currents, unbalance, converter pulse pattern, flicker and interaction with other substations

A train-starting event is a dynamic load, not a steady kVA block. The thermal model should use the duty cycle and regeneration profile, while the short-circuit model must keep the traction return path explicit.

3. Mechanical and Environmental Duty

Onboard units require shock, vibration, clearances, weight, centre of gravity, fire behaviour, enclosure, cooling-air contamination and maintenance access to be specified together. Wayside units require the civil foundation, flood level, noise, public access, fire separation and cable/rail return interfaces.

Dry-type and liquid-immersed designs are not interchangeable without checking fire, cooling, mass, leak containment and the exact railway standard route.

4. Verification and Handover

  • Confirm the traction transformer’s insulation levels, winding arrangement, tap range, neutral/return connection and rectifier interface.
  • Test ratio, winding resistance, dielectric performance, temperature rise and auxiliary circuits according to the applicable product standard.
  • Validate protection, return-current monitoring, rail potential, earthing and regenerative power limits under the project operating cases.
  • Keep vehicle acceptance, wayside commissioning and network integration evidence separate; an onboard type test does not certify a fixed substation installation.
