Prefabricated and Pad-Mounted Substations: IEC 62271-202 Selection Guide

A practical specification framework for compact substations, pad-mounted transformers, enclosure duty, personnel access, thermal rating and MV/LV integration up

1. Scope of the Prefabricated-Substation Category

IEC 62271-202:2022 covers enclosed AC prefabricated substations for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to 52 kV. The equipment may be walk-in or non-walk-in and is intended for outdoor locations where public-access protection, switching, transformer and low-voltage interfaces must be engineered as one assembly.

2. Selection Matrix

Main checksAisle, doors, ventilation, escape and arc-pressure pathLocking, touch protection, clearances and service access
Rating basisHV/LV equipment plus enclosure thermal studyTransformer, MV switchgear and LV board as a coordinated set

3. Thermal, Dielectric and Mechanical Checks

Specify the highest system voltage, power-frequency withstand, lightning impulse withstand, short-circuit current and duration before selecting the enclosure. Transformer heat rejection must be checked against solar radiation, ambient temperature, altitude, ventilation path and cable-compartment loading; the substation rating is not simply the transformer nameplate.

For a three-phase transformer interface, the first sizing check is:

S = √(3) · ULL · I

The final design must still confirm temperature rise, clearances, earthing, cable bending radii and the tested configuration supplied by the original manufacturer.

4. Procurement Checklist

  • Confirm IEC 62271-202 edition, walk-in status and public-access installation assumptions.
  • Require the exact HV/LV one-line, transformer fluid or dry-type class, MV switchgear type and LV assembly rating.
  • Verify internal-arc, ingress, corrosion, seismic, fire, oil-containment and lifting provisions against the project environment.
  • Treat a pad-mounted enclosure, transformer and switchgear as one coordinated system; do not combine ratings from unrelated datasheets.
