Monoblock Concrete Substations: Internal Arc (IAC-AB), Ventilation and IEC 62271-202

Engineering selection framework for reinforced monoblock concrete kiosks, internal arc classification (IAC-AB 20 kA 1 s), thermal enclosure classes and acoustic

1. Prefabricated Substation Safety Standards

Prefabricated concrete substations housing medium-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers and low-voltage switchboards are governed by IEC 62271-202:2022. Unlike assembled-panel sheet-steel enclosures, monoblock substations utilize high-strength C35/45 reinforced concrete cast in a single monolithic mold, eliminating seam leaks, structural warping, and ground moisture penetration.

2. Internal Arc Classification (IAC-AB) & Thermal Enclosure Class

Engineering RequirementStandard ClassPhysical Design Verification
Internal Arc DutyIAC-AB 20 kA 1 sWithstands internal arc overpressure without door opening or projectile ejection (A=authorized personnel, B=general public)
Pressure Relief PathDownward basement exhaustRupture flaps divert ionized gases into the underground foundation cable basin
Thermal Enclosure ClassClass 5, 10, 15, 20Δ Tenc defines temperature rise of transformer inside enclosure above free-air ambient
Acoustic AttenuationNoise reduction 10-15 dB(A)Concrete wall mass (> 2200 kg/m3) damps 100/120 Hz magnetostrictive core hum

The natural cooling thermal balance inside the enclosure satisfies:

V̇air = (Plosses) / (cp · ρair · Δ Tvent) [m3/s]

Where:

  • Plosses = P0 + Pk is the total heat rejected by the transformer, MV switchgear, and LV busbars.
  • Δ Tvent is the temperature difference across the labyrinth ventilation louvers.
  • Transformer derating must be applied if the enclosure class exceeds Class 10 (> 10 K interior rise).

3. Ingress Protection (IP) & Mechanical Strength (IK)

Per IEC 62271-202, the external concrete shell must provide IP43D (or IP54 for sensitive electronic RTUs) and IK10 mechanical impact resistance (20 Joules). Ventilation louvers feature insect-proof aluminum screens and labyrinth baffles designed to prevent horizontal driving rain penetration while maintaining convective cooling airflow.

4. Specification Guidelines

  • Specify IAC-AB with test certification for both operating corridors (walk-in) and perimeter access (non-walk-in).
  • Ensure oil retention sump beneath the transformer is sized for 100% of transformer liquid volume plus extinguishing gravel layer.
  • Verify concrete foundation waterproofing against groundwater ingress (water resistance ≥ 0.5 bar per DIN 1048).
  • Include integrated earthing ring connecting concrete rebars, transformer tank, switchgear frame, and door bonding jumpers.
