Mining and Flameproof Transformers: Ex-Zone, Cooling and Protection Selection

A risk-based guide to transformer selection in explosive atmospheres covering zones, gas or dust groups, temperature class, flameproof interfaces, earthing and

1. Do Not Treat “Ex-Proof” as a Generic Transformer Attribute

IEC 60079-0:2026 defines general construction, testing and marking requirements for Ex equipment and components intended for explosive atmospheres. Flameproof protection type “d” is covered through the relevant IEC 60079-1 requirements and must be assessed together with the complete certified equipment and its interfaces.

A transformer is not automatically flameproof because it is installed in a mine. The area classification, gas or dust hazard, equipment group, temperature class, protection concept, certificate and installation rules must be identified first.

2. Selection Inputs

InputRequired decision
Hazardous areaZone, gas/dust group, ambient temperature and normal or abnormal release scenario
Protection conceptFlameproof enclosure, increased safety, encapsulation or a certified combination appropriate to the equipment
Electrical dutyPrimary/secondary voltage, power, fault level, inrush, earthing and protection clearing time
EnvironmentWater, coal dust, corrosive atmosphere, vibration, impact, altitude, cooling and cable-entry constraints

The selected transformer, switchgear, cable glands, terminals, monitoring devices and enclosure must form a compatible certified installation. A certificate for one accessory cannot be transferred to a different enclosure, gland or cable construction.

3. Thermal and Fault Behaviour

Mining duty combines restricted cooling, dust deposits, high mechanical stress and difficult maintenance access. Calculate temperature rise, overload, blocked ventilation, liquid containment, winding hot-spot and external short-circuit duty for the actual installation.

Coordinate instantaneous and time-delayed protection with the transformer inrush and the downstream mining machinery. An overly fast setting can trip on energization; a delayed setting can exceed the certified thermal or cable duty.

4. Inspection and Maintenance

  • Record the zone dossier, certificate number, marking, ambient range, equipment group and temperature class.
  • Verify flame paths, covers, fasteners, cable glands, earthing continuity and enclosure damage without unauthorized machining or painting.
  • Test insulation, ratio, winding resistance, protection, alarms and thermal monitoring using procedures permitted by the certification.
  • Keep manufacturer instructions and competent-person inspection records with the exact serial number; do not assume a similar model has the same Ex boundary.
