### 1. Generator Step-Up (GSU) Operating Duty

GSU transformers step generator terminal voltage ($10.5\text{ kV} - 24\text{ kV}$) up to high-voltage transmission grids ($110\text{ kV} - 400\text{ kV}$) under continuous $100\%$ base-load thermal duty.

### 2. Overexcitation & Overfluxing Limits (IEEE C57.116)

Core overfluxing occurs during generator load rejection or startup under-frequency:

| Operating Condition | Allowed $V/Hz$ Ratio | Maximum Duration | Thermal Failure Mechanism |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Continuous Rated Operation** | $\le 1.05\text{ p.u.}$ | Indefinite | Normal thermal equilibrium |
| **Continuous Overfluxing** | **$\le 1.10\text{ p.u.}$** | Continuous | Increased core heating |
| **Moderate Overexcitation** | $1.15\text{ p.u.}$ | $30\text{ minutes}$ | Core clamping bolt overheating |
| **Severe Overexcitation** | $1.25\text{ p.u.}$ | $1.0\text{ minute}$ | Tank wall flux burning |
| **Extreme Overexcitation** | $1.40\text{ p.u.}$ | $5\text{ seconds}$ | Immediate trip required |

### 3. Overfluxing Mathematical Ratio

$$ \frac{V}{f} = \frac{V_{actual} / V_{rated}}{f_{actual} / f_{rated}} \quad [\text{p.u.}] $$

When $V/f > 1.10$, flux spills out of the saturated core into structural tie plates and tank walls, creating rapid hotspot heating.

### 4. Tertiary Delta ($\Delta$) Stabilizing Windings

GSU transformers incorporate a delta-connected tertiary winding to:
- Trap 3rd harmonic magnetizing currents ($3rd, 9th, 15th$).
- Maintain zero-sequence neutral stability during single line-to-ground faults.
