Cross-State ±800 kV Bulk Transmission Highway
The Barmer HVDC project originates at the massive renewable energy complex in Bhadla-Barmer (Rajasthan) and terminates at South Kalamb in Maharashtra, traversing Gujarat across a 1,000-kilometer right-of-way.
With two terminal converter stations rated at 6,000 MW total bipole capacity, the link incorporates Line-Commutated Converter (LCC) and hybrid VSC technologies alongside heavy smoothing reactors and harmonic filters.
Dynamic Stability with Synchronous Condensers and STATCOMs
To mitigate short-circuit ratio (SCR) degradation caused by heavy inverter-based photovoltaic generation in Rajasthan, POWERGRID is deploying ±300 MVAR STATCOMs and multi-unit synchronous condensers at both converter busbars.
The infrastructure ensures fault-ride-through stability and black-start readiness, establishing a critical clean energy corridor for western India’s industrial belt.
