## The Transition to 525 kV Extruded XLPE Cable Systems

European transmission system operators have achieved a critical milestone with the energization of the first multi-terminal 525 kV DC extruded subsea cable systems. Upgrading from conventional 320 kV links more than doubles transmission capacity per cable pair to 2,000 MW.

These high-capacity HVDC corridors connect deep-water offshore wind clusters directly into high-inertia onshore nodes across the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Germany, mitigating regional onshore bottleneck constraints.

## Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) for Grid Forming Stability

The onshore and offshore converter platforms integrate advanced Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topologies equipped with grid-forming control algorithms. Rather than relying on physical synchronous generators for frequency reference, the converters actively synthesize voltage vectors.

This ensures robust grid stability, synthetic inertia, and fault ride-through performance during severe AC grid disturbances.
