Alleviating Coastal Grid Bottlenecks for Independent Power Producers
The coastal Western and Northern Cape provinces possess South Africa’s highest-grade onshore wind and solar resources, but transmission line capacity has been completely exhausted for over three years, halting grid connection approvals for private IPPs.
The new Juno substation loops into Eskom’s Aurora-Kokerboom 400 kV corridor, deploying two 500 MVA 400/132 kV autotransformers and high-capacity 400 kV circuit breaker bays to evacuate power from shovel-ready wind developments.
Digital Substation Protection and Future HVDC Corridor Integration
Juno features full optical fiber IEC 61850 process bus protection relaying, automated fire deluge containment systems, and space reserved for static VAR compensators.
The substation forms the southern terminal for Eskom’s proposed Namaqualand transmission corridor, unlocking 1,200 MW of low-cost generation and stabilizing voltage across the Cape regional network.
