EirGrid and SONI Winter Outlook 2026–2027 Cites 1,000 MW Grid-Scale Battery Fleets and Synchronous Condensers for Island Reliability
Transmission system operators EirGrid and SONI have published the all-island Winter Outlook 2026–2027, confirming that Ireland’s operational grid-scale battery storage capacity has crossed 1,000 MW, underpinned by newly commissioned flywheel synchronous condensers.

Managing Non-Synchronous Penetration Levels Up to 85%
Under the flagship "Delivering a Secure, Sustainable Electricity System" (DS3) operational framework, the transmission system operators can now reliably manage System Non-Synchronous Penetration (SNSP) levels of up to 85%.
The report highlights that the addition of 1,020 MW / 2,100 MWh of operational BESS provides sub-second Fast Frequency Response (FFR), while utility synchronous condensers at Moneypoint and Shannonbridge inject crucial physical inertia and short-circuit fault current.
Eliminating Amber Alerts During Winter Peak Demand
Unlike previous winter seasons marked by capacity margin tightness, the coordinated dispatch of grid storage, demand-side response, and 110 kV static VAR compensators secures adequate generation adequacy margins throughout peak evening periods.
The report validates the role of inverter-based flexibility in stabilizing isolated island electricity grids.
