1. Harmonic Mitigation in Medium-Voltage VFD Drives

Large medium-voltage motor drives produce intense harmonic currents that cause grid voltage distortion and overheating. Multi-pulse phase-shifting transformers eliminate these harmonics by destructive interference.

3. Phase Shift Angle Formulation

For an m-pulse rectifier system fed by k secondary winding sets:

θshift = (60°) / (k) = (360°) / (m)

Harmonic frequencies cancelled on the primary side follow:

h = n · m ± 1 (n = 1, 2, 3, …)

4. Drive Insulation Stress & Common-Mode Voltage

VFD transformers must incorporate electrostatic shields between HV and secondary windings to block capacitive common-mode voltages from reaching the utility grid.
